Pricing to accelerate demand learning in dynamic assortment planning for perishable products

چکیده
Retailers, from fashion stores to grocery stores, have to decide what range of products to offer, i.e., their product assortment. New business trends, such as mass customization and shorter product life cycles, make predicting demand more difficult, which in turn complicates assortment planning. We propose and study a stochastic dynamic programming model for simultaneously making assortment and pricing decisions that incorporates demand learning using Bayesian updates. We analytically show that it is profitable for the retailer to give price discounts early on the sales season to accelerate demand learning. Our computational results demonstrate the benefits of such a policy and provide managerial insights that may help improve a retailer’s profitability. keywords: assortment planning, demand learning, Bayesian updating, stochastic dynamic programming, retailing

Assortment and Pricing with Demand Learning

متن کاملDynamic Pricing for Nonperishable Products with Demand Learning
A retailer is endowed with a finite inventory of a non-perishable product. Demand for this product is driven by a price-sensitive Poisson process that depends on an unknown parameter, θ; a proxy for the market size. If θ is high then the retailer can take advantage of a large market charging premium prices, but if θ is small then price markdowns can be applied to encourage sales. The retailer h...
متن کاملDynamic Pricing for Perishable Products with Cancelations and No-shows
Abstract Assume that customers are price sensitive, changes in the price of perishable products will bring changes in demand, and business can adjust the perishable products' price to influence the market demand, a perishable products multi-stage pricing model considering cancelations and no-shows is proposed, and the optimal pricing, the optimal expected revenue with the products' initial quan...
متن کاملDynamic Pricing for Vertically Differentiated Products
This paper studies the seller’s optimal pricing policies for a family of substitute perishable products. The seller aims to maximize her expected cumulative revenues over a finite selling horizon. At each demand epoch, the arriving customer observes the set of substitute products with positive inventory together with their prices. Based on this information as well as the customer’s own budget c...
متن کاملOptimal Dynamic Promotion and the Knapsack Problem for Perishable Items (Extended Abstract)
Senior managers in retail industry make important decisions upon assortment planning, product pricing, and product promotion. While product assortment is a strategic decision taken over a long-term planning period (Kök et al., 2006), the latter two are both strategic and tactical: they can be used in dayto-day marketing decisions to dynamically adjust to demand variations. Within the food retai...
